I held my gaze steadily to the front as Victor led me through the hotel’s luxurious lobby. Blinding camera flashes flared around us as we strode toward the main hall where most of the crowd was gathered.

Grand events like these always made me nervous. I had to keep reminding myself that I was here as Victor’s guest, not Boris’s slave.

“You okay, babe?” Victor whispered as we entered the crowded hall where the main party was being held.

“Yeah,” I said, offering him a smile.

A valet with a tray of drinks stopped before us. Plucking two flutes, Victor handed me one.

“Thanks,” I said, accepting it. A sip of the chilled, fizzy champagne calmed me at once. Victor hadn’t been wrong about the quality of food here. The champagne was as good as the ones from our personal collection.

“Master Sokolov,” an elderly man with a head of short gray hair called out from the corner. A younger man tagged along with him as he approached us. I recognized them immediately as one of the families who worked for the Sokolovs.

“How are you, Mr. Wyman?” said Victor. His tone was respectful but I could see the immediate boredom in his gaze.

“I wanted to introduce you to my son,” said the man. “This is Daniel. He’s nearly ready to take my position. I hope you’ll show him the same support as your father showed me.”

Victor’s gaze met the younger man’s. The slight narrowing of Victor’s eyes told me he had an immediate dislike for Daniel Wyman.

“Of course,” Victor lied smoothly.

Wyman didn’t get the chance to get another word out of his mouth as two more men approached Victor. I slowly slid away, knowing he was going to be swamped by even more people.

Victor was the face of the Sokolov gang now. Everyone was going to bow to him for favors. It was best I let him handle the crowd until he could escape.

I took another flute from a passing valet and mingled into the crowd. Groups of women eyed me with distaste but this time, they didn’t throw any scathing comments my way.

The men looking my way had stranger expressions though. Fear clouded their gazes. It felt like they were acknowledging me for the first time.

Everyone knows about Hugo’s fate, I realized. Some of his supporters were among the guests but they were all keeping themselves away from me.

I could get used to this, I thought, picking up a canape from a passing waitress. The tiny morsel of smoked salmon and cream cheese over a piece of toasted bagel was delicious.

“Enjoying the party?” a soft female voice sounded from behind me.

Turning around, I came face-to-face with Angel. She looked ravishing in a silver-sequined dress that hugged her lush curves. Her gorgeous blond hair was twisted up in an elegant bun and her lips were painted a bright cherry-red.

“Hey, gorgeous!” I gushed, moving forward to kiss her cheek. “It’s been a while.”

“Yeah,” she said, looking at me with a concerned look. “How have you been lately?”

“I’ve been great,” I said, feeling a little confused by the question.
